Restoration of the dome
From Copper to Zinc, as in Europe’s Grand Palaces
The iconic dome of the Hotel International au Lac regained its splendour thanks to a conservation-focused restoration begun in autumn 2017 and completed in March 2018, under the attentive supervision of Roberto Schmid. During the works, once the time-worn cladding had been removed, the wooden and metal additions accumulated over the decades were also dismantled, the result of various subsequent interventions.
As shown by archival photographs, some of the original dormers had already disappeared in images taken after 1938.
After restoring the masonry base to its original condition, carpenters constructed a new wooden supporting structure, clad with refined materials such as quartz-zinc and pre-patinated natural zinc—finishes widely used in the restoration of historical buildings and grand palaces throughout Europe. Entirely designed and crafted by Ticino artisans, the new dome was inaugurated in April 2018.
