Origin of the name "International au Lac"
Accessibility and location: how they shape hotel names
In 1905, a second route from Valais to the south through the Simplon Tunnel was planned, meant to be highlighted in 1906 by the Milan World’s Fair titled the “International Simplon Exhibition”. Construction was delayed, however, and the opening was postponed to spring 1906. Between September 1905 and April 1906, Anton Disler converted an existing building on Via Nassa into a 120-bed hotel in only six months. The Hotel International au Lac was likely created in the wake of Milan’s “International” exhibition.
Naming a hotel is never a matter of chance: names often aim to attract a specific clientele, highlight a location, or enhance the landscape. Hotel Victoria appeals to English guests, Beau-Séjour promises a pleasant stay, and the lake view — symbol of majestic sunrises — is emphasised through the ending “au Lac” (by the lake).
